More than LPS

There is more to Lean Construction than Last Planner                                         LCI-uk in collaboration with SCRI Forum

14th September 2010, The University of Salford

There is no doubt that the Last Planner System (LPS) has helped to improve construction activity in the UK. However there is a danger that some companies and individuals that apply LPS - or their own version of it - perceive that holding a few planning meetings equals Lean Construction.

Lean Construction is a philosophy. It is much more than tools and techniques. This workshop will explore current understanding of the philosophy of Lean, reinforce this philosophy and give practical examples of other ways to reduce process waste that can and should be used in conjunction with Last Planner.

Presenters at the event included:

  • Laura Dysart, Tayside Contracts will describe progress in embedding lean thinking within her organisation.
  • Sergio Kemmer, former site manager at C. Rolim in Brazil, will talk about an advanced and vigorous lean construction implementation within a residential and industrial constructor.
  • Steve Ward, Lean coordinator for the Scottish Construction Centre and LCI Director will convey a simple but effective way to engage your people in problem solving and continuous improvement, working within the lean philosophy of value and waste.
  • Algan Tezel, PhD student, University of Salford, will show what visual management can do to help site construction using examples from the field.
  • Alan Mossman, Director of The Change Business Ltd will show how closer links between design and construction can lead to benefits all round - even for clients.
  • Additional presenters will discuss productivity improvement and techiques applicable for workplace organisation.

Jointly organised by LCI-uk & SCRI, the event involved the whole supply chain - clients, designers, consultants and constructors. The aim was to create a synergistic integration of practical experience and academic knowledge, allowing ample time for discussion and networking.
